Reading and Phonics
Phonics and reading intent:
At Manor Infant and Nursery school we want our children to be lifelong learners. We know is that reading is a key life skill for all children. We believe that phonics provides the foundations of learning to make the development into fluent reading and writing easier. Through the teaching of phonics children learn to segment words to spell and blend sounds to read words. The teaching of phonics is of high priority.
The reading books at Manor Infant and Nursery school have been organised based on the sound and phase the child is reading. This is to allow them to continue developing their phonetic knowledge whilst also enjoying books. We are aware of the importance of language and vocabulary. All children have the opportunity to read and take home phonetical decodable books. The children also have access to additional books as we value children’s interests and want to promote conversations around books.
We begin to teach phonics when a child starts Nursery until the end of Key Stage 1. This is based on the children and their needs.
In nursery we begin by teaching phase 1, this focuses on listening to the sounds in the environment, instruments and other people. It also focuses on rhyme and rhythm.
In Early years and Year 1 we teach phonics daily using Monster Phonics every morning with additional lessons when it is needed.
We intend for children to become lifelong readers through encouraging reading for pleasure. The children will listen to books being read by different adults every day; they will take home a wide range of books, some that they can access themselves, and others to enjoy with someone else.
We will celebrate reading by ensuring books and other texts are shown throughout the school, on displays, in classrooms and all other shared spaces.
